The Trinacria: symbol of Sicily
The Trinacria is the official symbol of Sicily and is also featured in its regional coat of arms. Its origin is linked to the island's unique geographical shape, characterized by three headlands—Cape Peloro (northeast), Cape Passero (south), and Cape Lilibeo (west)—which give Sicily a triangular form. This also gave rise to its ancient name "Trinacria," meaning "with three headlands" or "three extremities."
At the center of the Trinacria is the head of Medusa, a mythological figure with a female face and serpentine hair. In Sicilian symbolism, Medusa represents protection and fertility, and her petrifying gaze is understood as a force capable of warding off evil. Around her, three bent legs spiral outwards, symbolizing the island's movement and balance in the Mediterranean.
